Teaching Law to the Next Generation of Public Health Professionals at NUS Medicine
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, infectious disease emergencies were largely viewed as the domain of epidemiologists and infectious disease specialists. However, one of the most important lessons we’ve learned is that an effective pandemic response also depends on robust legal and governance frameworks.
Without the right laws in place—covering everything from disease surveillance and One Health policies to proportionate public health measures that respect human rights, emergency regulatory authorization procedures, intellectual property management, and the sharing of pathogens and their genetic sequence data—responses become slower, less effective, and often less fair or equitable.
Against this background, I am thrilled to be contributing to greater awareness and capacity building on this topic through the new MSc in Infectious Disease Emergencies at the Centre for Infectious Disease Emergency Response (CIDER) at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
