Artificial Intelligence and the Life Sciences
Artificial intelligence in the biosciences can promote innovation, but it can also pose biosecurity risks that require the development of guardrails.
This is an entirely new field, and from a legal standpoint, several big questions arise:
1) Will/can AI laws (such as the EU AI Act or the US EO on AI) regulate bio-design tools in a manner that will reduce biosecurity risks? What standards need to be developed, and by whom?
2) How should current biosecurity norms and laws (such as the Biological Weapons Convention, Select Agent Lists, or Export Controls) be updated or interpreted to address AI-related risks?
3) Because concrete safety guidelines for AI and the biological sciences have yet to be developed, this provides an opportunity for stakeholders to influence policymaking. What are the most effective nodes of influence? In the European Union, the United States, or international organizations? Should a new partnership be established?
4) How is this issue evolving in Asian jurisdictions?
